Overview of the Daring to Shift Project (2020-2023)
DOT Tanzania has recently launched its new project “Daring to Shift Project” which is set to be implemented between 2020 and 2023 in various regions in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar.
Daring to Shift is a four-year project that places young women and men at the centre of inclusive community development and empowers them with the digital and human skills, knowledge, and networks they need to create opportunities and transform their own communities. Supported by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada, Daring to Shift is aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals and contributes to Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy.
The project will see 285 youth between the ages of 18 and 35 leading development initiatives in their own communities across four thematic pillars: digital jobs, digital business, social entrepreneurship, and community leadership.
Here is how 285 Youth, 200 of them being women, will lead their communities into digital literacy and ultimately financial freedom.
- 110 youth will be trained to become Community Leaders and they will train 9,000 young women and men in digital skills that will help improve their businesses.
- 150 young Social Innovators start impactful businesses that will solve community problems and lead to self-employment.
- 10 Digital Ambassadors will train 500 other youth in digital skills that will increase their employment chances in the job market.
The project will welcome youth from all over Tanzania with key regions being Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Dodoma, Mwanza, Tabora, Pwani, Iringa, Arusha, Tanga, and Zanzibar. 70% of all beneficiaries will be women, this means 6000 women will benefit from this project by 2023.
The introduction of D2S comes during a time when digital skills are crucial for any business and job seeker. It is imperative that we equip our youth with digital, leadership, entrepreneurship, and 21st-century skills to build their resilience in the Post Covid-19 era.
About the Digital Jobs Pillar:
Un- or underemployed youth in Tanzania aged 18-35 and 70% of them being women will participate in DOT’s Digital Jobs program, which will support them to attain relevant skills to take advantage of new jobs emerging as a result of digital transformation.
The digital skills development that is addressed through this program is context-specific, and based on employment market needs assessments, thereby ensuring that training objectives align with the labor market demands.
DOT Tanzania expects to impact 500 young women and men through the Digital Jobs Program. Through their engagement, DOT will provide them with market-relevant skills, coaching, and linkages to employment providers and freelancing platforms to access and secure improved livelihoods.
About the DOT Tanzania Digital Ambassadors:
Instilled in the DOT values of youth-led development, the Digital Ambassadors are multi-talented #DOTYouth who are highly skilled and experienced in digital skills, and are passionate about capacitating other youth in highly demanded digital skills with the ultimate outcome of securing a sustainable livelihood. In addition, the Digital Ambassadors will advocate for equal access to digital skills in their communities and participate in national and international events to present the voices of young women and men on addressing the digital divide among youth, especially for women. The Digital Ambassadors will also support research efforts to obtain data to support DOT programmes and case studies to showcase the digital inclusion impact being made to other youth in communities. Specifically, the selected Digital Ambassador will be responsible for the following:
- Training 300 un- or underemployed community members with digital skills to ultimately secure sustainable digital employment opportunities.
- Engage community members and other #DOTYouth to access digital learning platforms, including social media, for the purpose of skills development and creating a safe space for young people to discuss pressing issues in their communities, such as gender equality.
- Supporting DOT Tanzania in coordinating activities for virtual clubs established from the Tanzania Youth Digital Summit, held annually.
- Advocating for acknowledgment of the needs of young people, especially women in addressing the digital divide.
- Supporting programme beneficiaries impact measurement efforts through data collection and case study development.
For the year 2021-2022 DOT Tanzania will recruit and select 5 Digital Ambassadors, who will collectively train 300 community members. After being selected, Digital Ambassadors will undertake a comprehensive Training of Trainers (ToT) programme, which will hone their training skills required for the Digital Jobs programme, and execution of other responsibilities.
Following the ToT, Digital Ambassadors will recruit and onboard learners from their communities and/or youth from DOT Tanzania partner programmes. During the learners’ engagement phase, Digital Ambassadors, under the supervision of the Business and Training lead, will:
- Conduct needs assessment to understand the needs of their learners.
