Location: Arusha, Tanzania
The Primary Librarian supports the Primary School by managing, maintaining and promoting the school library and teacher resources. The librarian also supports the teaching staff by identifying, and suggesting for purchase, quality resources for the Primary School library, in conjunction with other members of staff. The librarian supports children’s learning by promoting enjoyment of, and excitement about, reading to all children and establishing skills for independent learning.

General
– Working Day of 7:30 am until 4:30pm, except Friday until 3:15pm.
– The library should be open during lunchtime and break time as prescribed in the timetable. The librarian will have lunch and break outside these student break times, as agreed with the Head of Primary.
– During the long holiday in July and August, the Primary Librarian should be in the library for a minimum of two days after school closing and one week prior to school opening. During other school holidays, the Primary Librarian should liaise with the Head of Primary about expectations of attendance.
Duties and responsibilities
– Develop and promote the role of the library in the school.
– Work closely with teaching staff to help plan and deliver the curriculum, taking a lead role in some Library lessons and units as agreed with the Head of Primary.
– Lead, at times, classes and programmes which offer storytelling for students, literacy skills and book talks.
– Promote the effective and efficient use of the library and library resources.
– Organise resources in an accessible way, considering the Primary School audience.
– Work with teaching staff to take a strategic approach to cultivating a love of reading in children.
– Be part of the team that looks after Primary Boarders’ Homework duties.
– Develop links with the Secondary School Librarian to facilitate transition and a coherent approach to library skills.
– Manage the Primary School library and library resources.
– Select, help to acquire, maintain and withdraw library stock, ensuring a balance between subject and ability levels.
– Organise, catalogue and classify library resources, both electronic and print-based
– Make full use of ICT in the library and manage the library resources. This includes managing any permanent or temporary technological equipment such as laptops,

computers, printers and scanners, as well as managing the school’s subscription to the Libib online library management software.
– Make the library attractive and accessible to all children and staff, including displays, guiding and publicity materials.
– Look after library classes as needed.
– Keep the Head of Primary informed about the needs and development of the library in the school.
Professional Responsibilities
– Place a priority on the Primary Librarian’s own Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure that students’ learning is stimulating and contributes to the aims of the school.
– Participate in active and constructive collaboration with colleagues in terms of sharing ideas and good practice
– Take part in peer observation programmes to improve practice.
– Participate in library development meetings and other relevant professional development opportunities offered by the school and in conjunction with other schools.
– Carry out cover for absent colleagues and, within school guidelines, be prepared to teach in the library (rather than ‘supervise’) for an absent departmental colleague.
– Be available for work at the school in good time to complete all necessary preparations and meetings before the start of the school year in accordance with the contract of employment (see ‘General’ section above).
– Participate in the school’s appraisal programme.
– Seek advice from line managers with regard to professional development and career paths.
– Take responsibility for areas that may be reviewed in a full school audit in preparation for inspections.
Pastoral
– With full regard for safeguarding policies and procedures, be ready to listen and respond to any student who needs to speak to you to share a concern.
– Maintain a friendly and welcoming environment in the library, which encourages children to make use of the facility.
