Community Forest Pemba (CFP) is currently seeking a Horticultural Trade Consultant to create a robust baseline assessment of Horticultural trade on Unguja and Pemba Islands and fill gaps in the existing horticultural value chain and market information to strengthen the delivery of the EU-funded AGRI-CONNECT VIUNGO project in Zanzibar. Successful applicants will be required to travel to both Unguja and Pemba Islands to work closely with the VIUNGO project team.


CFP is requesting proposals from individuals and/or organizations with comprehensive horticultural trade assessment experience and a strong track record of success to undertake the Zanzibar Horticultural Trade Baseline and Market Assessment with two distinct tasks:


Task 1 – Develop a robust Horticultural Trade Baseline to gather critical trade and market information to create baseline data and generate key indicators that will be used as benchmarks to assist with project evaluation and reporting. This assessment will encompass regional, national, and international trade.


Task 2 – Develop a detailed Horticultural Market Assessment to identify key challenges and opportunities to grow domestic, national, and international trade, by working closely with VIUNGO project staff to understand and gathering critical market and value chain information gaps.


ROLES AND DUTIES OF THE CONSULTANT

The Consultant will have extensive experience conducting research and creating baseline studies and will be responsible for delivering all activities in a timely and professional manner. In addition, the consultant(s) will be responsible for the quality of the data and ensuring that the highest ethical standards for human-subjects research will be adhered to. The consultant has the overall responsibility for the organization of implementation Zanzibar Horticultural Trade Baseline and Market Assessment to ensure that the objectives are fully realized. Logistical support and coordination for the studies study will be provided by CFP as outlined above.


 The Consultant will: 

  • Work closely with the VIUNGO project team to deliver activities
  • Review all relevant project documents
  • Conduct a review of secondary literature including: project documents, available national surveys that collect information on Trade and Market, and situation analyses (where relevant)
  • Finalize the various research instruments and interview guides for different categories of people that will be interviewed.
  • Coordinate data collection and analysis
  • Analyze and interpret results
  • Interpret information specifically addressing the Market Assessment objectives
  • Present on findings to stakeholders throughout the process
  • Write and submit the final (2) Final Reports


EXPERIENCE

  • The Lead Consultant should have 5-7 years experience working in Business and Marketing Sector Development
  • A Minimum of MSc/MA level of education.
  • Extensive experience in Business Sector Development/ Marketing programming coupled with relevant experience in Baseline Studies in similar fields.
  • Experience in applying both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods.
  • Experience in managing and coordinating research/task/ exercises within agreed time-frame and budget.
  • Excellent in application of participatory approaches
  • Ability to work with communities in local languages (Swahili)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (English and Swahili)
  • Ability to work under pressure in challenging environments
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Determination and focus on goals and results
  • Sound management and effective facilitation skills
  • Excellent knowledge of value chain analysis in Tanzania or East Africa
  • Strong analytical, research, and presentation skills


LOCATION AND TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

The fieldwork will be conducted in Unguja and Pemba Islands where VIUNGO project is implemented. However, the consultant may wish to seek any information/visit outside location when need deemed necessary. Any international/national travel and all accommodation costs are the responsibility of the consultants. Community Forests Pemba staff are able to provide support for travel plans and arrangements at consultants request.

Considering the current and prevailing Global COVID-19 situation, the consultancy work must comply with all local and National COVID -19 preventive measures and guidelines. Consultants are required to take all necessary precautions to keep them and others safe.
