For more than 20 years, TechnoServe has been working in Tanzania with farmers, cooperatives, suppliers and processors to strategically develop competitive industries around key crops, including cash crops such as cocoa, horticulture and coffee, and staples such as maize. We are helping farmers make the transition from subsistence to commercial production, assisting processors to improve operations, and identifying opportunities for investment in agriculture. Additionally, we are supporting the diversification of Tanzania's economy through entrepreneurship programs that empower young men and women to create thriving businesses.

TechnoServe is preparing for an anticipated USAID-funded horticulture activity in Tanzania. This exciting opportunity aims to help increase the commercialization, inclusiveness, and competitiveness of horticulture market systems in Tanzania.

One of the positions we anticipate is a Lead for Sustainable Horticulture. 

Key Activities the Sustainable Horticulture Lead will be responsible for include:

  • Consistently driving the market systems development (MSD) approach in project interventions.
  • Analyzing potential value chains to identify opportunities to increase the efficiency of actors, and improve productivity and profitability of specific value chains.
  • Designing and leading implementation of interventions to address gaps and market failures for a variety of horticultural value chains across Tanzania. 

Successful candidates will have:

  • A degree in Food Science, Agriculture, Economics, Business or related area, or equivalent experience in food/horticulture market systems.
  • Over 5 years of professional experience in food/horticulture market systems, including experience working in the private sector. 
  • Experience in the following areas:
    • Market Systems Development (MSD) /Making Markets Work for the Poor (M4P) approaches.
    • Conducting value chain analysis and developing value chain work plans.
    • Innovative agricultural technologies that boost productivity and environmental sustainability along the value chain.
    • Climate-smart agriculture solutions, familiarity with climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in food/horticulture market systems
    • Managing market linkages between various stakeholders, including smallholder farmers with buyers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of youth and gender issues in agriculture or market systems. 
  • Experience working in Tanzania and/or Sub-Saharan Africa
