JGI Tanzania is currently seeking to recruit suitably qualified and competent Tanzanian to fill the following vacant position:

Job Position: GIS Analyst
Program: Landscape Conservation in Western Tanzania (LCWT)
Duty Station: Kigoma
Reporting Line: Deputy Chief of Party

Job Summary:

The GIS Analyst shall execute and implement activities funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of the Landscape Conservation in Western Tanzania (LCWT) program. The GIS Analyst will support monitoring of Chimpanzee and their habitat and other wildlife particularly on Village Forest Reserves and on wildlife corridors. The job holder will provide geospatial technical expertise in remote sensing and spatial planning, field data collection, mapping with special attention to online mapping platforms particularly ArcGIS Online for data storage, management and sharing hands on experience Web Mapping and Web Apps is also desired.

Key Job Responsibilities & Duties:

Main technical responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Provide regular technical support and advice to Village Forest Monitors (FMs) across the project area particularly during data uploading and sharing of data and derived information with village governments.
  • Consult with FMs to ensure that their efforts in monitoring village forests are consistent as agreed to avoid gaps which could be used by trespassers to encroach reserved village forest reserves.
  • Evaluate FMs performance and update respective FMs to improve their monitoring efforts.
  • Organize short term trainings to FMs to improve their monitoring and data collection skills using Survey 123 and smartphones.
  • Coordinate recruitment of Village Forest Monitors in close collaboration with the district officials and village authorities as may be needed.
  • Nurture smooth collaboration between FMs, VLUM Teams and their respective village authorities.
  • Analyze and produce FM Quarter Report showing status and trend of wildlife and threats within village forests and corridors.
  • Analyze, produce, and communicate to stakeholders’ weekly wildlife, deforestation and fire alerts using a Decision Support and Alert System (DSAS) running on ArcGIS platform
  • Work closely with Program GIS Officer and Land Use Planning Officer in supporting planning and mapping tasks particularly Land Use Plans.
  • Support Mapping tasks and printing of paper maps and satellite images of program staff and districts to effectively communicate geospatial information.
  • Manage and maintain GIS database as part of the DSAS and hardware resources including mobile devices (smartphones, GPS, tablets, WakaWaka), servers, plotters, workstations, and laptops including organizing for repairs for defect devices.
  • Coordinate with IT to ensure reliable operation and access to the Internet for data uploading and downloading.
  • Coordinate maintenance of shared resources like plotters and GIS laptops.
  • Prepare and submit activity reports in a timely manner
  • And any other job as may be assigned to you your Supervisor or Management.

Minimum Job Qualifications and other Requirements:

  •  Graduate degree in GIS, Geoinformation, Geography & Environment Studies, or related field with practical experience in using GIS Software.
  •  At least 5 years working experience in Geospatial Technical support to large conservation programs particularly community conservation projects.
  •  Ability to use GIS Applications preferably ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  •  Ability to customize and use electronic data collection tools such as ArcGIS Survey123, Survey123 Connect for editing XLS Form for publishing to ArcGIS Online and create feature layers based on form specification for data collection.
  •  Ability to use data analysis programs such as R, SPSS, Ms Excel etc. and other computer programs for communication such as Ms Word, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.
  • Experience working in rural and remote areas of Tanzania implementing spatial data collection mapping to support programs.
  •  A track record of successful work on complex donor funded projects in a rural context
  •  Previous knowledge and experience in working to support conservation and sustainable natural resources management projects is desirable.
  • Ability to work under pressure, tight deadlines and less supervision, self-motivated person, team player, reporting and presentation skills. Able to spend extended periods in rural settings.
  •  Good Communication skills – fluent in Swahili and English, both verbal and written. This position involves working with a wide range of people within the institution, local communities, local and international partners, including technical and non-technical colleagues.
