ERM is looking for a passionate Environmental Consultant to join our rapidly growing capital project delivery team in Africa.The role is an exciting opportunity to help deliver a range of critical capital projects for our clients in East Africa.
The consultant would be expected to have demonstrable experience delivering Africa based Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) projects in various sectors.
Role expectations
- Deliver and project manage a variety of Environmental and Social (E&S) projects;
- Navigate client projects through licensing and consenting processes in Africa (specifically Tanzania & East Africa initially).
- Manage and appoint subcontractors for the required specialist studies.
- Develop client proposals and to build client relationship as well as developing their own internal and external network.
- Ensure client satisfaction through project communication and engagement.
- Be educated to degree or postgraduate degree in an environmental science, sociology, environmental engineering, etc.
- Have 4 to 10 years’ experience either in a consulting environment, the regulatory sector or from oil & Gas industry.
- Have strong writing and communication skills.
- Have an understanding of environmental assessments including environmental impact assessment, auditing, EHS regulations in Tanzania and best practice (e.g. IFC Performance Standards).
- Have a track record in the delivery of ESIAs for various development projects to international standards.
- Have project management experience of small capital development projects.
- Have experience in undertaking stakeholder engagement and regulator meetings and preparing materials to support consultation.
- Have an understanding for environmental and social legislation in Tanzania/East Africa and have knowledge of developments in Africa.

Professional registration with National Environmental Management
Council (NEMC), both as EIA Expert and Environmental Audit Expert.
- Delivering or coordinating small projects or whole elements of larger multidisciplinary projects – as ERM works closely with some of the world’s largest organisations, we anticipate that this role will require close collaboration with our regional and global capital project delivery teams.
- Liaison specifically with National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) and other government departments, on ERMs behalf on projects where this is applicable.
- Assisting and coordinating public involvement processes including liaison with authorities, interested and affected parties (primarily through the ESIA Process).
- Delivering multiple project tasks or components, including support on proposals.
- Understanding the interrelationships between ERM services and policies and how these are applied within the clients’ business model.
- Establishing strong working relationships with clients through project delivery.
- Contributing to our key local, regional and global clients and supporting the solutions ERM delivers for their Environmental and Social Governance related challenges.
- Making use of effective working relationships within the business unit and participate in global technical communities to ensure strong network of resources.
- Remaining up to date with external market and client industry trends.
- Sharing expertise and knowledge within the business unit and/or global practice area.
- Understanding how work of the project team and/or practice community contributes to ERM’s success
- Adhering to all ERM and client requirements, specifically those related to H&S and governance.
- Supervising subcontractors during fieldwork, ensuring they comply with ERM's Health & Safety policies and ABC code and work is completed in line with project scope.
- Applying client/sector knowledge when carrying out tasks associated with drafting project deliverables and or proposals.
- Using ERM’s methodologies and technologies consistently in line with ERM and client expectations.
- Managing and successfully delivering small discrete projects/tasks and /or specific deliverables or phases of work on larger projects.
- You will be part of our interdisciplinary and international team and will collaborate with ERM offices in the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, Middle East and Africa regions.
