Job Advert:  Farm Manager/Extension Officer, Pangani, Tanga.

Are you looking for a new and exciting role with an ambitious start-up in the field of sustainable and regenerative agriculture? Do you have skills and expertise and a desire to learn and grow with the company?

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Farm Extension Officer/Manager to oversee our 50+ acre coastal farm in Pangani district, Tanga. The organization is looking to become a national leader in best practice for sustainable and regenerative agriculture (permaculture) and is a quadruple bottom line business: People, Planet, Profit and Purpose. The company aims to combine the best of traditional indigenous knowledge in farming and ecological practices with new scientific approaches, knowledge and systems design, for the long-term health of the environment and future generations in Tanzania and the planet.

Job Description

You will be flexible, adaptable, and capable of working independently and in a team. You will be enthusiastic about sustainable agriculture and willing to learn and grow with the organisation. As the face of the organisation in the Pangani area you will be a good communicator and able to represent the interests of both the farm while also understanding the needs of the community, liaising regularly with owners and community representatives and local authorities where necessary.

Main responsibilities:

  • Use your expertise to oversee and monitor crop planting and development.
  • Oversee and manage crop harvesting and transportation.
  • Assist senior management with recruiting seasonal farm crop pickers and labourers, managing the team and training new recruits.
  • Work with senior management to develop best practice.
  • Assist senior management with researching new crops and implementing new sustainable farming methods and systems design, in line with our sustainability policies and company goals.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of equipment and keeping senior management informed of any issues.
  • Be responsible for maintaining farm security including living fences and alert senior management promptly of any security issues.
  • Keep good records of daily farm activities including but not limited to expenditures.
  • Building good relationships with the local community and government authorities.
  • You may be required to take on additional seasonal or other responsibilities as the company grows, in line with statutory limitations.

Requirements and qualifications for the role:

Essential:

  • Minimum qualification (or equivalent experience) of a diploma in Farm Management (or similar related subject)
  • 2-3 years’ minimum experience in farm management and/or extension work.
  • Good Proficiency in English.
  • Willingness to live on site and travel nationally where necessary.
  • Basic knowledge or experience of organic farming methods and agroforestry/permaculture practices.

Desired but not essential:

  • Good working knowledge of spreadsheets and word processing such as Excel and Word.
  • Administrative training.
  • Any additional qualifications in sustainable farming or ecology.
  • Good foundation or understanding of indigenous ecological knowledge.

Basic Salary: Competitive, starting at 500,000 tsh/pcm, depending on experience.

Job type: Initially 1 year contract, with good potential for renewal. 

Probationary period: 6 months.
